Introducing Yn Moddey Dhoo: A PSX-Style Indie Horror Based on Manx Folklore

What is Yn Moddey Dhoo?

My first full solo dev game is in the early stages of development and I wanted to talk a little bit about it.

Yn Moddey Dhoo (Manx for the black dog) is a first-person indie horror game, with a retro PSX aesthetic with 1-bit dithering. Imagine the visual style of Return of the Obra Dinn, Crow Country and the gameplay of Outlast.

The Premise

The game takes place in the 18th century in Peel Castle on the Isle of Man. Soldiers garrisoned in the castle fear a large and imposing black dog that comes into the hearth room each night to warm itself by the fire.

One day, a drunk soldier full of bravado challenges the large creature to follow him as he traverses the passages of the dark castle alone; a decision he would come to regret. Explore the dark and narrow corridors of Peel Castle, hiding from the stalking black dog, solving puzzles and discovering the dark history of the castle. Whatever you do - don’t look it in its eyes.

Why Yn Moddey Dhoo?

The game is based on local folklore of the Isle of Man, and will heavily feature the native language of Manx throughout. The Isle of Man is where I originate from and will always be home to me. This project is my way of sharing my love of the beautiful island and its rich history and culture.
